Three North Dakota coal counties – Oliver, Mercer and McLean – ranked among the state’s top six for highest average annual wages for 2009. Oliver County, which had been first for many years and was second in 2008, regained its top ranking with average wages of $60,202. Mercer ranked second with $52,384 and McLean came in sixth with $42,027 – all above the statewide average of $35,970.

North Dakota’s lignite industry did not begin with the present-day surface mining operations that can be seen in the state’s “Coal Country”. Rather, the industry’s roots stem from underground mines and outcrops that left behind potentially dangerous hazards to the public. More than 130 years later, the state of North Dakota is working to eliminate the potential hazards left behind.

When Basin Electric purchased the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, near Beulah, ND, in 1988, they signed a revenue-sharing agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). More than 20 years later, the final $7.1 million payment has been made, closing the two-decade old agreement.

North Dakota's four large lignite mines produced 29.9 million tons of lignite coal in 2009 - up slightly from the 29.7 million tons produced in 2008. For the past 20 years, North Dakota's lignite production has consistently been about 30 million tons per year, making North Dakota one of 10 major coal- producing states in the United States.
